Growing up in Austria, I channelled my curiosity for language and culture into a profession that allows me to embrace these things on a daily basis and bridge the gap between them – but really between people.

Qualifications

As a professional conference interpreter with an MA in Conference Interpreting, I have experience in facilitating communication in a variety of settings and modes. From simultaneously interpreting at an agricultural conference on site to a film workshop online. From ensuring a steady flow of communication via consecutive interpreting at appointments with local authorities to safety trainings for construction workers.

Currently, I am an MA conference interpreting trainer at the University of Galway, where I teach students how to train efficiently and sustainably. Through this role, I learned how to foster interpreting techniques in others and gained pedagogical skills. Recently, I strengthened my training skills at the Training for Trainers seminar held in Brussels by DG SCIC of the European Union. In this seminar, EU interpreters imparted status quo training methods and discussed various tricks and tips on how to improve interpreting training to make students fit for interpreting at EU institutions. My tutoring experience also includes more than 6 years of German teaching to individuals and groups.

The MA in Conference Interpreting at the University of Galway is the programme that trained me as an interpreter as well. The intensive master’s course – geared towards interpreting at EU institutions – was packed with rigorous practice on all modes of interpreting, at times together with EU interpreters. The foundation of my skills was built during my BA in Transcultural Communication (Translation, Interpreting) at the University of Vienna. In both of my studies, I learned how to conceptualize language and culture, and how to smoothly transfer ideas from one culture and language to another.

A one-year-stay in Mexico, as well as living in my adopted home country of Ireland have taught me that while knowing “words” is essential for any language professional, it is indispensable to know the whole world that surrounds a word, i.e., the connotations, in order to understand the full impact an expression has.
